Seismic Joints and Seismic Upgrades
Seismic Joints: Chelsea Corp is an approved installer of EmSeal, WABO, BAS and Balco for seismic joints.
An example that we are particularly proud of is Auckland’s Sky Tower, where we installed the world’s first round seismic joint of its kind around the base. We have also been responsible for fitting the seismic joints for numerous fire departments, government agencies, shopping centres, schools, churches and high-rise buildings.
Seismic Upgrades: A modification to existing structures to make them more resistant to seismic activity, ground motion, or soil failure, due to earthquakes. When a building is below its NBS rating, then restrengthening is required to get it to its necessary level.
Examples of these upgrades can include adding:
- Structural steel
- Carbon fibre
- Helifix bars
- Phython fixings
Fanshawe Street Carpark’s shearwall structural upgrade exemplifies this well. Chelsea Corp drilled and epoxied approximately 10,000 starter bars, which were then tied to a further 30 tonnes of reinforcement steel, before a new concrete layer 150mm thick was shotcreted in place. In addition, sections of the floor on every level were broken out adjacent to the shear walls, additional reinforcing added to strengthen the floor and tie it to the shear wall before the sections were concreted.
Further project examples include:
- Downtown Carpark
- Victoria Street Carpark
- Mt Wellington Fire Station
