Project Description

A popular thoroughfare for inner city workers, theatre-goers and tourists as it is the lane which connects Wellesley Street to Aotea Square.

The transformation took place in 2014 and consisted of a new glass canopy and façade, complete with new waterproofing and tiles. This was incorporated into the City Center Masterplan and was noted as a hugely important segment of what is described as the city center pedestrian laneway circuit, running from Aotea Square to the Waterfront. The design also considers future upgrades to Wellesley Street and the proposed site of the Aotea City Rail Link Station, on Albert Street.

CHALLENGES

To expedite the construction works and ensure public safety, the lane was closed to pedestrians from late June to late September. Intermittent access was allowed depending on construction occurring that day, however customer access to New Zealand Post, Metro Centre and Bledisloe House main entrance was maintained throughout. Chelsea navigated continuous updates on programming to allow for everchanging access requirements to the public.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

Chelsea was contacted and awarded this contract as a result of their works to the Sky Tower and Federal streets with JFC.  The need to completely waterproof the substrate, complete concrete repairs and provide a full warranty prior to the installation of pavers, was key for the Auckland Council.  SIKA’s recommended products were chosen for their background and support provided throughout installation.  The full scope of the coating was approximately 1,200m2 which started at Victoria Street and concluded at the Aotea Square.
